The first part of this paper, accordingly, will analyze these problems and suggest an alternative framework for analyzing tourism and culture in Southeast Asia. In the second part of this paper, I pose three aspects of the relationship between tourism and culture which seem particularly important and worthy of further exploration. These involve the expanded cultural role of the state, the unique articulation with culture which tourism as an industry in Southeast Asia involves, and the way in which tourism constitutes a new cultural institution in its own right.
