Poultry traders shocked over price increase

MUAR: Chicken traders here are shocked over the sudden increase in the price of live chicken supplied by the farms, which have exceeded the ceiling price.
The traders received letters from the Federation of Livestock Farmers Association notifying them of the new price, which took effect immediately.
A group of traders here said the ex-farm ceiling price for live chicken was now RM4.80 instead of RM4.50.
Their spokesman Latif Talip wondered whether the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry had given its approval.
“Since the price is now 30 sen above the ceiling price, we want to know if we can sell processed chicken above the ceiling price of RM6.
“If we are not allowed to go beyond the ceiling price, we will not sell chicken to consumers,??? he said yesterday.
Latif said if approval had indeed been given, the traders wanted to know the new ceiling price for processed birds, as they could not continue to sell chicken at less than RM6.
He said that the traders believed that the association increased the ex-farm price of live chicken to take advantage of the school holidays.
