Data shows the enrolment in Standard One in the country”, “metaData”: { “visible”: “true” } } }; KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, said today one of the achievements of developed countries is their ability to accept the reality of the multiplicity of their people and provide educational infrastructure which can optmise the growth and development of the diverse and different potential.
As such, he said, the educational system and approach in developed countries gave room for flexibility to develop the potential of human capital from an early age.
“As a result, the developed nations are successful not only in producing leading intellectuals but also the majority of champions in the fields of sport, arts, literature, theatre, fashion design and much more.
“Society in developed countries interprets and well understands the implicit philosophies of the explicit treasures of nature, and subsequently accepts the reality of the multiplicity of beings, provides every encouragement, and erects infrastructure for the young talents to flourish,” he said at the presentation of awards for excellence at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati in Gombak here.
Raja Nazrin Shah said the system of evaluation in education overly inclined towards academic performance was contrary to the principles of nature and subjected educators to a blurred or short-sighted view which made them fail to interpret the wider and more comprehensive educational philosophies.
Data shows the enrolment in Standard One in the country was 500,000 in 2006 while the recruitment of first-degree students in institutions of higher learning in 2007 was only 76,000.
“It is reality that not all students will get to become undergraduates. In fact, the reality is that more students will fail to get the opportunity to set foot in a university.
“Where will they go, then? The country and, in fact, the world cannot function fully if all the world’s citizens become professors in universities.
“If all the people become professors in universities, who will cultivate rice or produce cotton to make clothes. If everyone wants to be a pilot, who will drive the taxis for the passengers emerging from KLIA (KL International Airport)?” he asked.
Raja Nazrin Shah said every individual had an important role to play and every occupation was a noble one.
“Prior to examination by a doctor, a patient has to depend on the ambulance driver to rush him safely to the hospital.
“Before the patient can be operated on, he will have to be wheeled into the operation theatre by the relevant personnel.
“The plans drawn by an architect will not transform into buildings if the construction is not undertaken by the workers, from the person who mixes the cement to the one laying the bricks.
“Even when it comes to preparing a corpse for burial, the gravedigger is no less important than the ‘imam’ who says the prayers,” he said.
As such, Raja Nazrin Shah said, the school should serve as the nursery for the development of various talents, to recognise the various potential, and to nurture the various interests.
He said the school should be like an orchard which enables all the trees to bear fruit.
“The capability and ability of every child should be recognised because every one of them has a role to play in society and in the country,” he said.
He said the recognition should be accorded with prudence and in a comprehensive manner to ensure that every student was given attention, loved by educators and parents, and appreciated by society and the country.
“Children do not ask to be born in this world. They are the products of the union of love between their parents.
“Children are the trust placed by God in parents who have brought them into this world. Bring them up with love so that they will grow up, self-confident and resolute,” he said.
Raja Nazrin Shah said many disciplinary and social problems faced by youngsters cropped up when they were deprived of the love of their parents as they felt isolated from the mainstream which had been restricted by the recognition only for academic excellence that denied the growth of their talents in other aspects while at school.
Children who felt that they were loved, appreciated and recognised would, in turn, love their parents and feel that they were an asset to the school, society and the country, he said.
Raja Nazrin Shah also said that school disciplinary problems did not have their roots in the school because family and domestic situations were the early causes.
“Discord in the family will bring stress to bear on the emotions of the children. There is no educator more superior than parents to help in the mental and emotional development of children,” he said.
Teachers, he said, were only facilitators who helped to strengthen the mind and emotions of children, and it was inappropriate to leave the responsibility of educating children totally in the hands of teachers.
Raja Nazrin Shah said parents should remain close to their children and set a good example for them to emulate because children who grow up to be successful adults come from harmonious families where parents always give children attention, guidance and love.
“Children whose capabilities and talents are recognised will become more self-confident,” he said.
At the event, Raja Nazrin Shah made a personal contribution of RM100,000 to the school’s development fund. — Bernama
