The Morality of Members of Parliament Crossing the Floor
Response to Bar Council and Others
The Bar Council, Harris Ibrahim and Sean Ang are reported in the New Straits Times on September 10, 2008 to have said that Members of Parliament crossing the floor to join another party is legal but immoral. It is therefore necessary to draw the attention of the public to several fundamental principles with regard to the issue on the morality of MPs crossing the floor. Crossing the floor to sit as a member of parliament in another political party is nothing new in parliamentary democracies. It has been described as the height of treachery. It has also been praised as the stuff which parliamentarian heroes are made of. The great Sir Winston Churchill is perhaps the most famous parliamentarian to cross the floor and switch allegiance on more than one occasion. There is no dispute that crossing the floor for money or personal gain is both immoral and a betrayal of the voters’ trust. However, when the MP crosses not for personal gain but in the interest and welfare of his constituents then he should be commended.

Intimidating journalists. I have just spoken to the National Union of Journalist president Norila Daud. She expressed concern with the decision by the Government to detain a Sin Chew reporter under the Internal Security Act, apparently over her story on suspended Umno man Ahmad Ismail’s “Chinese were squatters” remarks.

No one gets to choose where they’re born. Walski knows he sure damn well didn’t… it wasn’t like there was some pre-birth geo-domicile form that he had to fill out. Well, at least that he can remember, anyway.
Nope. Just like when or under what circumstances we were born. It’s all part of this organo-cosmic soap opera called Life.
What we do have the power and ability to change, however, is our collective existence within a community of individuals, many times extrapolated, to that notion called Nationhood.

I’m posting this from RPk’s house.
10 cops came here at about 1.10 this afternoon and detained him under section 73 of the ISA. I’m told that by 1.50pm, they were out of the house.

I was reading the Proclamation of Independence again recently. It struck me how the proclamation starts with not only with the utterance “In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful??? but also, in the next sentence, “Praise be to God, the Lord of the Universe (Rabb Al-‘alamin) and may the blessings and peace of God be upon His Messengers.???
