Raja Petra to be detained 2yrs under ISA (update 2)

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin was served with an order Monday night that would see him detained in Kamunting for two years under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Raja Petra will be held without trial under Section 8(1) of the ISA, reporters were told by his lawyers, who were at the High Court hear to argue their habeas corpus application on Tuesday. The detention order was signed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar on Monday night.

Raja Petra to be sent to Kamunting Sep 23, 08 9:34am

Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin will be sent to Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping, Perak today to begin his two-year detention under the Internal Security Act, said his lawyer.

The home minister has signed his detention order last night to be held without trial under section 8 of the tough security law. Under the Act, the government can renew his detention indefinitely.

“Anwar is going to see the Agong tomorrow(?)”.

I wasn’t very sure if Bala meant it as a question or a statement when we spoke last night. He had been more sure of Anwar Ibrahim’s earlier deadline of 16/9, that the Opposition Leader had secured enough number of BN defectors to enable Pakatan Rakyat to form a Government. I told Bala – this was after supper at Chawan in Bangsar yesterday – that I didn’t know if Anwar was meeting the Agong or not.

The arrests of MP Theresa Kok and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng under the ISA following that of blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin raise grave concern for Malaysians.

An endearing legacy of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s leadership that we have come to appreciate is the openness albeit limited, that has come as a breath of fresh air after 2 decades of punitive control of the public sphere.

The arrests of the three individuals under the draconian law at a time when Malaysians have become more mature politically and less inclined to be baited by racial politics will no doubt further erode the legitimacy of and support for the ruling party, perhaps irrevocably.

Of no less import will be the repercussions to Malaysia’s reputation internationally, that time and again the ruling party resorts to an unjust and antiquated piece of legislation to silence dissent in order to sustain her cling to power.

Change Of Government – The Queen’s Option

Thirty three years ago, Australia was faced with a constitutional crisis so serious that the Queen was forced to use her option. Her vice-regal representative, the Governor General, stepped in and sacked the prime minister and appointed another as caretaker. Fresh elections were held one month later in which the caretaker PM and his party won.

Malaysia and Australia have a few things in common. Both are members of the Commonwealth and both are constitutional monarchies and parliamentary democracies. Both are also federated states. But the diffrence is that Australia’s Queen resides in London whereas Malaysia’s King lives with his people right where they are. Another diference is that one is an established democracy while the other is a developing one.

Details are sketchy. I met Sheih on the day Jeff Ooi and Rocky was summoned to Denmark House over a defamation suit brought against them by NST. Since then we have forged a close friendship despite his having to relocate to Kota Bahru to be an aide to YB Datuk Husam Musa.

Bloggers and those who visit/comment on blogs have come to acknowledge Shieh’s dedication to justice and fairplay. In solidarity with Shieh’s wife Bariah and kids lets keep him and them in our thoughts and in our prayers.
