NGOs submit report to UN Human Rights Council

PETALING JAYA (Sept 8, 2008): The Coalition of Malaysian Non-Governmental Organisations (COMANGO) today submitted their Stakeholder Reports to the Human Rights Council, paving the way for Malaysia to be reviewed by the Council for the first time next year.

The 10-page report reflects on the situation of human rights in Malaysia to the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, based in Geneva, Switzerland, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) documentation and monitoring coordinator John Liu told a press conference here.

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Sept 2008: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali today reiterated that the mass crossover of Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Pakatan Rakyat was still on track, but that it would take place a few days after 16 Sept.

Disclosing details of a three-hour morning meeting with the Pakatan Rakyat coalition leaders, Syed Husin said the plan would go ahead but with some changes in the date.

KUCHING: No matter who you talk to, the general consensus is that the Budget 2009 would be of no significance if it does not solve the people’s bread and butter issues.

PETALING JAYA (Aug 28, 2008) : Tuesday’s thumping win by Parti Keadilan Rakyat de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was due to his party’s ability to win over the fence-sitters, political analysts say.

Wong Chin Huat, a journalism lecturer of Monash University Malaysia who is doing a PhD thesis on electoral systems and party politics, told theSun that Anwar had “solidly captured the middle ground” to win in Permatang Pauh.

PETALING JAYA: The blocking of access to online news portal Malaysia Today by the Communication and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) has generated a flurry of responses, with most saying it goes against the Government’s promise not to censor the Internet.

In his blog, MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat said he hoped that SKMM would reconsider its decision and that he was a “little surprised and disturbed??? about what had happened.
